What we hear

Mining operations challenges.

Why mining operators choose Real Bytes for technology support.

Remote mine sites have unreliable connectivity

Operations across multiple remote locations with limited broadband. Equipment monitoring, production tracking, and safety systems disconnect when connectivity fails. No backup for critical systems.

ASD Annual Cyber Threat Report 2025-26

Remote sites and industrial systems change the threat picture.

ASD's 2025-26 report confirms attackers increasingly log in rather than break in, and mining operators carry that risk across corporate systems, remote site connectivity and operational technology at once. The report's data breach incident responses rose by more than 66% year on year, which is why identity controls and OT segmentation belong in the same security conversation.

Compliance you actually have

The frameworks that apply to mining and resources.

SOCI Act, state mine safety regs and 24/7 operations. We translate the obligations into a practical control set, implement the technical controls and keep the evidence audit ready.

  • Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018

Mining is a captured sector. CIRMP rules and mandatory cyber incident reporting apply to designated assets.

  • State mining WHS regulations

Coal Mining Safety and Health Act (Qld), Mining Act 1992 (NSW), MSI Act (WA) and equivalents in SA, NT and Tas.

  • AS IEC 62443 series

Industrial automation and control system security expected at OT and IT boundaries.

  • Privacy Act 1988

Workforce, contractor and incident data still triggers Australian Privacy Principles obligations.

  • Remote site connectivity drops take production offline within minutes.
  • OT and IT networks are still flat in many operations, exposing SCADA to ransomware.
  • Equipment telematics often live in vendor silos with no unified production view.
  • Safety incident evidence still lives in spreadsheets and email.

Australian regulatory context

What mining and resources leaders ask us about Australian cyber and data protection law.

Every answer is grounded in the live Australian primary source, with a link to our detailed look and to the responsible regulator. Reviewed against OAIC, APRA, ASD, DISR and Home Affairs sources.

Are we a critical infrastructure asset under the SOCI Act?

Most large Australian mining and resources operations are critical infrastructure assets under the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018 (Cth). Responsible entities must register the asset, maintain a Critical Infrastructure Risk Management Program covering cyber, physical, personnel and supply chain hazards, and report cyber security incidents to the Australian Signals Directorate. Significant incidents are reportable within 12 hours, other notifiable incidents within 72 hours. Mandatory ransomware payment reporting under the Cyber Security Act 2024 also applies regardless of turnover.

What are the mandatory ransomware payment reporting obligations?

Part 3 of the Cyber Security Act 2024 (Cth) commenced on 30 May 2025. Businesses with annual turnover over $3 million, and all critical infrastructure entities, must report any ransomware or cyber extortion payment to the Australian Signals Directorate within 72 hours of making the payment or becoming aware that a payment has been made on their behalf. Reports are lodged through the ASD ReportCyber portal and sit alongside, not in place of, OAIC notification under the Notifiable Data Breaches scheme.

Is the Essential Eight still the benchmark, or are we waiting for the new ASD framework?

Both, for now. ASD published its successor, the Essentials series, on 15 October 2026. The Essential Eight stays current through the transition, ASD has not set a retirement date yet, and existing ML1 to ML3 work counts as evidence towards the Essentials, though ratings do not convert automatically. Keep going with the Essential Eight work you have planned and map it to the Essentials as you go.

How should we approach AI governance in Australia?

The Guidance for AI Adoption, published by the National AI Centre in late 2025, replaced the Voluntary AI Safety Standard of September 2024. It condenses the ten voluntary guardrails into six essential practices: decide who is accountable, understand impacts and plan accordingly, measure and manage risks, share essential information, test and monitor, and maintain human control. Existing obligations under the Privacy Act and Australian Consumer Law still apply to AI use. A shadow AI policy is now table stakes.

What does the new statutory tort for serious invasions of privacy mean for us?

Since 10 June 2025, individuals in Australia can sue any person or organisation that seriously and intentionally or recklessly invades their privacy, whether through intrusion on seclusion or misuse of information. The cause of action is not limited to entities covered by the Australian Privacy Principles. Damages for non-economic loss and punitive damages are capped at the greater of around $478,550 or the maximum amount for defamation non-economic loss. Surveillance, employee records handling, vendor due diligence, and incident response should all be reviewed.

What do Australian cyber insurers actually want to see at renewal?

Australian cyber underwriters now consistently require evidence of six operational controls on proposal forms: MFA on all users (especially privileged), EDR or MDR on all endpoints, tested backups including Microsoft 365, a documented and exercised incident response plan, a patch management cadence, and security awareness training. Renewals through 2025 and 2026 are also beginning to ask about the statutory privacy tort exposure and AI governance posture.

How it works

From first walk to running shift after shift.

What we do and what you do at each step. Worked around your shift roster.

  1. Step 1Week 1: We assess your sites and systems

A walk of each site to understand connectivity, equipment, OT and IT networks, and where safety and production data sits. We map what you have before we recommend anything. What you do: You give us site access and introduce us to your operations and safety leads.

  2. Step 2Weeks 2 to 8: We connect sites, equipment and data

Redundant connectivity installed. Fleet management, production dashboards, and safety systems integrated. OT and IT networks isolated to AS IEC 62443. Staged around your shift roster. What you do: You approve the plan and we coordinate installations during planned downtime.

  3. Step 3Ongoing: We keep it running shift after shift

24/7 helpdesk that understands mining. Equipment data, dashboards, and safety records maintained. Quick escalation for production-critical issues without communication delays. What you do: You call one number when something breaks. We own it until it is fixed.

Questions

What people ask before they call.

How do you connect multiple remote mine sites reliably?

Combination of fixed wireless, satellite, and LTE with redundancy. Each site gets assessed for optimal connectivity mix. Critical systems have automatic failover to ensure no downtime.

Can we integrate with existing mill control and SCADA systems?

Yes. We work with legacy systems using network isolation and data bridges. No operational disruption. Modern analytics layered on top without changing core systems.

What Australian mining regulations should our IT support?

Mining sits under state-based safety regimes: the Coal Mining Safety and Health Act (Qld), the Mining Act 1992 and Work Health and Safety (Mines and Petroleum) Regulation in NSW, the Mines Safety and Inspection Act (WA), and equivalents in SA, NT and Tas. Mining is also a captured sector under the Security of Critical Infrastructure Act 2018, so designated assets carry CIRMP and mandatory cyber incident reporting obligations. Our digital systems support audit evidence, incident logging and the kind of records each regulator expects.

How does fleet management work with different equipment types?

Unified dashboards aggregating data from trucks, loaders, drills, and other equipment. Integration with OEM telematics systems. Standardised metrics for utilisation and maintenance.

Do you support round-the-clock mining operations?

Yes. 24/7 helpdesk support, after-hours incident response, and system monitoring. Our team understands mining operations, not just IT support.

Next step

Ready to optimise mining operations?

We assess your current systems, identify technology gaps, and build a unified platform for production, safety, and equipment management.
