The people on the
other end of the ticket.

When you call us, you speak to one of these engineers. Not a tier-one queue, not an offshore answering service, and not a scripted intake process. This page is a working snapshot of the team that runs our clients' environments every day.

Each profile carries a recent field note written by the engineer, describing a real piece of work. The unglamorous detail has been left in deliberately. Most operational work looks like that, and we would rather you see how we think than how we market.

Operating note
"You should be able to name the engineer who fixed it. That is the point."

Real Bytes is a Brisbane-based Australian managed IT services provider (MSP) and managed security services provider (MSSP) serving businesses across Australia. The operations team is deliberately small — the same engineers, on the same clients, year after year. The compounding effect is that the person looking at your tenancy today is the same person who looked at it six months ago. That is the entire reason small operational details do not get lost between engineers.

We do not rotate junior staff through unfamiliar environments to pad utilisation. We do not hand tickets off to a third party offshore overnight. And we do not pretend a chatbot is a substitute for an engineer who already knows your network, your business hours, and which printer the accounts team has quietly given up on.

Every engineer on this page is on the active roster. They take real calls, attend real sites, and own real work end to end. Pre-sales conversations, scoping calls, and technical questions on existing environments all route directly to the engineer who would do the work. Not through an account manager.

Clients on our managed plans are assigned a primary engineer and a documented secondary from day one of onboarding. Continuity of personnel is tracked as an operational metric in our internal reporting, not as a marketing line. Average client tenure on managed plans currently sits beyond six years, and the same engineers have been on those accounts for most of that time.

Temporary site infrastructureVolunteer IT teamsVendor coordinationOperational governance
Recent field note
Context
Ran IT for AJ2025, the 26th Australian Scout Jamboree at Maryborough Showgrounds and Equestrian Park in January 2025. Ten days, nearly 10,000 participants, a temporary township stood up on a showground site that ordinarily has no permanent enterprise infrastructure. Activities ranged from zip-lining and water sports to onsite catering, medical, retail, and 24/7 site operations. Every one of those teams needed connectivity, point-of-sale, radios, CCTV, or all of the above.
Diagnosis
The hard part was not the technology, it was the scale and the timeline. Roughly five weeks of build, ten days live, then everything packed back into shipping containers. WiFi had to cover the full showgrounds and equestrian park for both staff operations and participant welfare. Retail and food outlets needed reliable EFTPOS across the site. The medical centre needed clinical-grade connectivity. CCTV and access control had to cover a temporary township housing 10,000 people, most of them under 18. The volunteer IT crew was capable but spread across the country, so the operating model had to be documented well enough that someone arriving on day one of build could pick up a run sheet and contribute.
Resolution
Designed the network and operations model in the months leading up. Site-wide WiFi backbone with redundant uplinks, segmented VLANs for retail, medical, operations, and participant access. Pre-built and pre-configured the core hardware so it landed onsite ready to rack. Documented every subsystem, every credential, every escalation path before build week so the volunteer team had something to work from rather than tribal knowledge. Site went live on schedule, ran the full ten days, and shut down cleanly. The same operating documentation is now the reference model for the next Jamboree.

Context
Worked as part of the field and operations management team on a national network refresh for an aviation client operating in a regulated, security-sensitive industry. Scope covered switching, routing, and wireless across multiple sites in different states, delivered alongside the client's internal IT teams and several other specialist contractors each accountable for their own part of the stack. The existing kit was end-of-life, the security posture needed lifting to current standards, and the cutover had to happen inside strict change windows without disrupting flight operations or the broader airport tenants sharing parts of the infrastructure.
Diagnosis
Months of planning before a single cable was touched. The hard work was less the technology and more keeping multiple teams moving in lockstep on the ground. Operated as part of the field crew working to the design set by the client's network and security teams alongside the airport operator's IT group. Joint site walks at every location to validate cabinet space, power, cooling, and fibre paths against the documented design. Per-site migration runbooks with named owners for each step, rollback positions, comms plans for tenants, and pre-staged hardware so the on-night window was assembly and verification, not problem-solving.
Resolution
Cutovers ran site by site across multiple states, coordinated so each state's change window aligned with its lowest-impact operational period and with what the other contractors were delivering in parallel. Every site was racked, configured, and tested in advance, with the cutover itself a documented swap rather than a build. No flight operations impact across the programme. The client ended up with consistent configuration, current-generation security controls, and a single operating model across the national footprint. Documentation handed back so the internal team owns the environment end to end, not us.

MSP Practice Lead · Microsoft 365 migrations & infrastructure takeovers

Tenant-to-tenant migrationsMicrosoft 365 upliftsNetwork takeoversRemote site delivery
Recent field note
Context
Two pieces of work that ran in parallel. The first was a run of Microsoft 365 tenant migrations and security uplifts across a portfolio of clients, including a couple of tenant-to-tenant cutovers tied to corporate restructures and acquisitions. Mail, OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams, identity, and conditional access all had to land on the new tenant cleanly, with users back at their desks Monday morning and no loss of history. The second was a network takeover for a not-for-profit operating from an island site, where the previous provider had left thin documentation and the only way to validate the environment was to actually fly out and walk it.
Diagnosis
On the tenant migrations, the recurring pattern was not the mailbox move itself, it was everything sitting around it. Shared mailboxes with stale delegations, Teams meetings with calendar invites pointing at the old tenant, SharePoint sites with broken external sharing links, conditional access policies that had been built up over years and nobody could explain. Each cutover was treated as a discovery exercise first, migration second. For the island NFP takeover, the network had grown organically. Mixed vendor switching, undocumented VLANs, a satellite link that was the only path off the island, and a server rack that had not had a backup tested in over a year. The risk profile was unusual because if anything went wrong, the next engineer was a boat ride away.
Resolution
Tenant cutovers ran on documented runbooks with pre-stage, delta sync, and weekend cutover windows. Conditional access and identity governance were uplifted as part of the move rather than carried across as-is, so each client landed on a cleaner posture than they started with. Users opened Outlook on Monday and kept working. For the island NFP, did a full site audit in person, rebuilt the documentation from the ground up, replaced the end-of-life core switching and firewall, and put proper monitoring and remote access in place so future work does not require a site visit unless it genuinely does. The NFP now has a documented network, tested backups, and a support model that matches the realities of where they operate.

Automation & Platform Lead · Internal tooling & multi-tenant operations

Workflow automationPSA & RMM toolingMulti-tenant Microsoft 365Reporting & dashboards
Recent field note
Context
The honest reality of running an MSP is that an engineer can only hold so many client sites in their head at once. Across the portfolio we look after schools, aged care, professional services, NFPs, and operational technology sites, each with their own tenants, identity setups, backup configurations, security baselines, and quirks. The work here was building the internal tooling and automation that lets a small team run that footprint without things falling through the cracks. Less a single project, more an ongoing platform discipline.
Diagnosis
The pattern across MSPs that lose control of their portfolios is always the same. Tooling that was right for ten clients gets stretched to a hundred without being rebuilt. Engineers end up doing the same Microsoft 365 audit by hand across thirty tenants. New starter onboarding is a checklist in someone's head. Backup status lives in five different vendor portals. Patch compliance is a screenshot in a monthly report. The work is fixable, but only if you treat the tooling as a product rather than a side task. Mapped every recurring activity across the portfolio, identified which ones were burning engineer hours without adding value, and prioritised the ones where automation also reduced the chance of human error.
Resolution
Built out a layered internal stack. PSA and RMM as the operational backbone with documented runbooks for every recurring activity. Cross-tenant Microsoft 365 reporting that surfaces conditional access gaps, MFA coverage, licence drift, and stale guest accounts across every client tenant in one view. Automated new starter and offboarding flows tied to HR triggers where the client allows it. Backup status, patch compliance, and security baseline drift consolidated into a single internal dashboard so the team sees the whole portfolio at a glance rather than logging into ten vendor portals. The outcome is not flashy. It is that engineers spend their time on the work clients actually pay for, and the things that should never get missed do not get missed.

Recent field note
Context
Independent school running a 1:1 device programme for around 600 students. Year-start rollout was four weeks away and the imaging process from the previous provider would have required every device to be touched individually. Roughly 800 device-hours of work to land before the first day of term.
Diagnosis
Reviewed the existing process and the new device hardware. Vendor supported zero-touch enrolment via Autopilot, but the previous provider had been imaging manually for years and had not refactored the workflow. The school IT coordinator was a single person and did not have the bandwidth for manual provisioning at that scale.
Resolution
Rebuilt the deployment around Autopilot and Intune. Devices arrived from the vendor, students unboxed them on day one, signed in once, and the device built itself with the correct applications, restrictions, and bookmarks. The coordinator went from 800 hours of work to spot checks and exception handling. Same process now runs every year-start without our involvement, which is the point.

Service Desk & Field Engineer · L1/L2 service desk & Melbourne field work

Recent field note
Context
Sits at the front of the service desk queue and covers Melbourne field call-outs for clients across the southern footprint. Day to day is a mix of local Melbourne business support (walk-up issues, onsite installs, boardroom AV, network patching, printer and WiFi escalations) and triage for client staff working overseas. The overseas piece is the unusual one. A handful of our clients have project teams, executives or technicians stationed in Asia, the UK and Europe at any given time, and when their laptop dies at 11pm Melbourne time it is usually Bill picking it up.
Diagnosis
Overseas triage looks simple but rarely is. The usual pattern is a user reporting they "cannot get into anything", which lands on the queue as a vague ticket from a timezone that does not line up with ours. The diagnostic discipline is to confirm what is actually broken before reaching for tooling. Conditional access blocking the sign-in because they have moved country. MFA prompts going to a SIM that does not roam. Corporate VPN routing them back through Australia and breaking the local app they need. A laptop that has not checked into Intune in weeks because it has been offline on hotel WiFi. Each one looks identical from the user's side. Each one needs a different fix.
Resolution
Local Melbourne work is run the same way as any of our other regions. Documented, ticketed, parts ordered through our Australian supply chain, onsite where it needs to be, and handed back with notes the next engineer can pick up. For overseas users the standard pattern is a quick call to confirm what they can and cannot access, a check against Entra sign-in logs and Intune device status, and either a remote fix into the device or a conditional access exception scoped narrowly enough to unblock them without weakening the tenant. The goal is the user back at work inside the hour, and a note on the ticket so the same fix is faster next time.

Working with us

If you want to speak to one of them, we will just put you on with them.

Engineers being reachable sounds like a small thing until you have dealt with the alternative. Whether you are scoping a project, weighing up a change of provider, or just want a second opinion on something specific, the easiest path is to tell us the discipline you would like to talk to. We will line up the right engineer. No sales handover, no relay through an account manager, no obligation either way.

Where engineers sit

Brisbane operations centre is the home base. Field engineers travel for site cutovers, project mobilisations, and on-site fault rectification across Queensland and interstate as required.

Reachability

Business hours Mon to Fri, 8am to 5pm AEST. After-hours on-call cover for managed clients. Helpdesk and field engineering both staffed locally.
