Networks and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi that works, and one team to call when it doesn't.

Drop-outs in the meeting room, guests on the same network as your files, a firewall nobody has updated in years. Most business networks were set up once and then left alone. We design it properly, install it, and look after it from then on.

Which network brand fits

Meraki, Catalyst, UniFi or Aruba?

Answer three questions and see which way we'd lean, and what to watch for.

Three questions. You get the brand we'd lean towards and why. It's our view as a starting point, not a quote.

How would you rather pay?
How big is it?
What's there now?

Our lean

UniFi

Bought once with no per-device licence for the core software. Network, cameras and doors in one app.

  • Optional paid extras for UniFi include CyberSecure threat feeds and extended hardware cover.

Worth knowing

What happens when a Meraki licence lapses.

Meraki gear needs an active licence. When an organisation falls out of licence, Meraki starts a 30-day grace period and the network keeps running. If nothing's renewed by the end of it, the devices stop passing client traffic. In plain terms, the Wi-Fi and network stop working for staff.

That isn't a reason to avoid Meraki. It's a reason to have someone tracking the date. We do that for every licensed device we look after.

From Meraki's documentation on co-termination licensing, checked 31 October 2026.

Why it matters

Firewalls and remote access are a main target.

Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found that 31% of breaches now start with attackers exploiting a software flaw, ahead of stolen passwords. Firewalls and VPN boxes facing the internet are on the front line. Keeping them updated is part of the job, not an extra.

Mistakes we see

Five ways business networks drift.

  • Firmware never updatedSet up once and left alone for years.
  • Licences forgottenUntil the grace period runs out.
  • One flat networkGuests and cameras next to the finance PC.
  • Consumer gear in the cupboardA home router doing a business job.
  • Admin passwords with one personWho has since left.

What happens

Priced before anything is installed.

  1. Step 1Look

What's old, what's unlicensed and where it's weak.

  2. Step 2Design

A written plan with the hardware we recommend and why, priced up front.

  3. Step 3Install

Set up and tested before it arrives, switched over out of hours.

  4. Step 4Look after it

Monitoring, updates and licence renewals from then on.

Questions

What people ask about business networks.

Who supports business Wi-Fi and networks in Brisbane?

Real Bytes designs, installs and supports business Wi-Fi, switches and firewalls from Brisbane, on Cisco Meraki, Cisco Catalyst, UniFi and HPE Aruba. The engineers who build the network support it afterwards, and we monitor networks remotely anywhere in Australia.

Meraki or UniFi for a small business?

It mostly comes down to how you want to pay. Meraki is licensed per device each year. UniFi is bought once with no per-device licence for the core software. We compare both against your sites, staff and budget, and explain the recommendation in writing.

What happens if a Meraki licence runs out?

Meraki gives a 30-day grace period. If the licences aren't renewed by then, the devices stop passing client traffic. We track renewal dates so it doesn't sneak up on you.

Are you a Cisco partner?

Yes. Real Bytes Pty Ltd is a Cisco SMB and Mid-Market Business Practice partner for Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. You can check it on the Cisco Partner Locator.

Can you take over the network we already have?

Yes. We audit what's in place, document it and support it as it is. We only suggest replacing gear when it's out of support or no longer fits the business.

Do you keep the firmware updated?

Yes. Updates for firewalls, switches and access points are part of looking after the network, done out of hours and checked afterwards.

Next step

Wi-Fi dropping out or gear getting old?

Tell us what you have and we'll tell you what it needs.
