Technology management
Firewalls, anti-virus, patching, EDR, encryption and the systems that carry the work.
1.1.0.0Engage a technical support specialist
That is us. Platinum raises this to a service agreement with key incident response staff reachable within 8 working hours, which we write into your agreement.
- Platinum
1.1.1.0MSP SLA with 8 working hour incident response
1.2.0.1Install and configure a firewall
Guardz checks every device firewall is on. We supply and configure the network firewall: UniFi, Fortinet, Check Point, Meraki or Cato.
1.3.0.1Anti-virus on all organisation devices
Guardz managed anti-malware, or Microsoft Defender, Bitdefender or Sophos on our management stack. Mobile devices are covered through official app stores and device management.
1.4.0.0Automatically install tested patches on all devices
Guardz lists third-party apps with known vulnerabilities. We install the patches through our remote management tooling.
1.5.0.0TLS certificates on public websites
Guardz external scanning checks certificates on verified domains. We fix anything flagged with your web host or Cloudflare.
1.6.0.1All servers updated and patched
Guardz shows vulnerable software on servers. We patch servers on a documented schedule with critical patches applied within 14 days of release.
1.12.0.0Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)
Guardz managed EDR, or CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, Huntress or Microsoft Defender, monitoring workstations, laptops and servers with automatic isolation. Diamond adds 24/7 managed detection and response under SLA, which we deliver through our monitoring service.
- Diamond
1.12.1.0EDR with 24/7 managed detection and response under SLA
1.7.0.1Vulnerability scanning of internet-facing assets
Guardz external scans run weekly on assets linked to verified domains. We remediate findings, and cover any WAN IPs or VPN portals not on a domain with another scanner.
1.8.0.0Important data encrypted at rest
Guardz reports BitLocker and FileVault status on every device. We turn encryption on through endpoint policy across servers, workstations, laptops, external drives and cloud storage.
1.9.0.0Application control
Only approved applications may run on workstations and laptops. We build and maintain the approved list and enforce it with ThreatLocker hash, publisher or path rules through endpoint policy.
1.10.0.0Disable untrusted Microsoft Office macros
We enforce macro restrictions across workstations, laptops and servers through Microsoft 365 and endpoint policy. Enable all macros is never selected.
1.11.0.0Annual penetration, vulnerability and social engineering testing
Guardz phishing simulations cover the social engineering element and external scanning covers vulnerability testing. We arrange an external specialist for the annual penetration test.
Access management
Passwords, password managers, multi-factor authentication and email authentication.
2.1.0.1Strong password hygiene
Guardz dark web monitoring flags leaked credentials tied to your users. We set the password policy in your directory and reset exposed accounts.
2.2.0.0No administrative privileges on employee accounts
We remove local admin rights through directory and endpoint configuration, for local and domain accounts, and keep a record of exceptions.
2.3.0.0Individual user accounts for every employee
We audit your directory for shared accounts and replace them with named accounts, so activity can be traced and access revoked on departure.
2.4.0.1Password manager
We deploy and configure 1Password or Keeper for privileged users, with MFA, role-based access and audit logging. Gold extends it to all staff.
- Gold
2.4.1.1Extended to all staff
2.5.0.0MFA on all employee email accounts
Guardz identity threat detection verifies MFA on Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace and detects MFA bypass. We enable MFA in your directory. Platinum restricts it to phishing-resistant methods: authenticator apps or hardware keys, not SMS or email codes.
- Platinum
2.5.1.0Phishing-resistant methods only, SMS and email codes excluded
2.12.0.0Email authentication and anti-spoofing
Guardz flags gaps and blocks spoofing inbound. We configure SPF on every sending domain. Gold steps up to DKIM and an enforced DMARC policy with EasyDMARC or Sendmarc.
- Gold
2.12.1.0DKIM and enforced DMARC added
2.6.0.0MFA on all business applications and social media
Guardz flags connected apps without MFA. We enable it app by app across every cloud business application and social account. Diamond restricts it to phishing-resistant methods.
- Diamond
2.6.1.0Phishing-resistant methods on all business apps
2.7.0.1RDP only over VPN
We configure the firewall and VPN, on UniFi, Fortinet or Cato, so remote desktop is never exposed to the internet and only reachable through a managed VPN or proxy.
2.8.0.0Cloud credential and IAM management
We configure least-privilege access across cloud accounts including admins, store SSH keys and remote credentials centrally rather than on laptops, and federate cloud identity with your directory.
2.9.0.0MFA where important data is stored
Guardz flags data stores without MFA. We enable it on every system holding critical, sensitive or operational data, not just email.
2.10.0.0MFA on VPN connections
We configure MFA on the VPN for connections from the internet and the corporate network, with Cisco Duo or Okta.
2.11.0.0MFA on RDP connections
We configure MFA at the remote desktop and network layer with Cisco Duo, covering both internet-facing and internal connections.
Backup and recovery
Backups, tested restores, and the insurance that funds a recovery.
3.1.0.1Backup and recovery strategy for important digital assets
We design and test your backups on Veeam, Acronis, Axcient, Synology or Keepit, for the data that matters. Guardz does not cover backup, so this one is ours and the backup vendor. Platinum raises it to weekly or better backups, at least 6 months of retention, a restore tested at least yearly and an offline, isolated copy.
- Platinum
3.1.1.1Weekly or better backups, 6 month retention, annual tested restore, offline isolated copy
3.2.0.0Business or cyber insurance
You buy the cover, including ransomware recovery, incident response costs and business interruption. Guardz posture and evidence reports support the application, and we help answer the security questions.
Policies, plans and procedures
The written rules: cybersecurity policy, incident response, AI use and supplier trust.
4.1.0.1Confidentiality agreements
A human resources and legal process binding staff, contractors and third parties before they access your data. We give you a checklist and confirm the evidence is in place.
4.2.0.1Invoice fraud policy and procedures
We draft the policy with you around how your business actually pays and approves invoices, including dual verification for bank account changes.
4.3.0.0Visitor register
An on-premises process run by your business, recording name, organisation and check-in and out times. We supply a simple register and the evidence format.
4.4.0.0Cybersecurity policy
We draft one policy covering security requirements, staff responsibilities and acceptable use, every employee reads and signs it, and we help you review it annually.
4.5.0.0Incident response plan
Guardz managed detection and response provides live detection, containment and reporting. We write the plan with you: who to call, containment steps and communications. Diamond adds breach notification playbooks for customers, staff, media and authorities.
- Diamond
4.5.1.0Breach notification playbooks and data exposure guidance added
4.6.0.0Secure physical document destruction
An operational process: contracts, financial records and HR files shredded or destroyed through a secure service. We help you choose a method and record the evidence.
4.7.0.0Secure disposal of devices
The Guardz device inventory shows what to retire. We wipe, record and dispose of devices beyond recovery before resale or donation.
4.8.0.0Digital asset register
Guardz device, user, application and external asset inventories export to seed the register of where sensitive data lives. We add external media and offline hardware. Diamond extends it to map every asset holding personal data, audited annually.
- Diamond
4.8.1.0Personal data mapping and annual audit added
4.11.0.0Responsible AI use policy
We write rules for which AI tools staff may use with company and client data, how risks are managed and how privacy compliance is kept.
4.9.0.1Digital trust program with suppliers
We help you set up a risk-based supplier program: minimum cyber hygiene for suppliers without an equivalent certification, contractual incident notification and an annual review of the certifications they hold.
4.10.0.0Police vetting for privileged staff
Carried out through a background checking provider for employees and contractors with administrative privileges or after-hours access, including cleaning and maintenance contractors. We tell you which staff need it.
Education and training
Awareness training and incident exercises that test the plan works.
5.1.0.0Cybersecurity awareness training for all employees
Guardz adaptive training and phishing simulations with per-user records and grades. We enrol your team and report results. Gold raises this to a continuous campaign with an annual policy review.
- Gold
5.1.1.0Continuous campaign with phishing simulations and annual review
5.2.0.0Training to test the incident response plan
The plan must be tested live at least once a year, not just reviewed. We run the red, blue or purple team exercise with your incident response staff, using real detection and response reports as source material.
Mapping reflects SMB1001:2026 v1.0 and our platform as published in October 2026. Platform coverage supports a control but never meets it alone, and it does not guarantee a certification outcome. CyberCert issues certificates. Dynamic Standards International publishes the standard.
SMB1001:2027
What moved between 2026 and 2027.
DSI published the 2027 edition on 1 September 2026, and it becomes free to read on 1 January 2027. A current certificate runs its full 12 months, so plan for these before you renew.

Who does it
Software keeps the lights on. People do the rest.
No SMB1001 requirement is met by software alone. Our platform runs the always-on controls and keeps the evidence fresh. Our engineers do the configuration, policy and process work. A few items only your business can do, like buying insurance or arranging police checks.

Reading a code
Four numbers tell you what a control is.
- Area 2Access management. 1 is technology, 3 backup and recovery, 4 policies, 5 training.
- Requirement 5Multi-factor sign-in on email, the fifth requirement in that area.
- Variant 1A raised version a higher tier asks for. Here, Platinum's phishing resistant methods. 0 is the base control.
- Revision 1The wording was amended in a later edition. This one moved from 2.5.1.0 in 2026 to 2.5.1.1 in 2027.

Questions
What people ask about the requirements.
Can Real Bytes take us to every SMB1001 level?
Yes. We work across all five tiers: Bronze (requirements 1 to 7), Silver (1 to 17), Gold (1 to 27), Platinum (1 to 32) and Diamond (all 39). Tiers are cumulative, so each level includes everything below it. Certification itself is issued by CyberCert, not by us.
Which platform do you use, and what happens where it stops?
We run Guardz as the always-on layer for every client: anti-malware, EDR, awareness training with phishing simulations, external scanning, dark web monitoring and device posture, covering 17 of the 39 requirements. Where the platform stops, our stack takes over: SentinelOne for endpoint detection and response, Check Point for email and AI security, UniFi for network infrastructure, ThreatLocker for application control, Keeper for passwords, Sendmarc for email authentication, and ConnectWise for remote monitoring, backup and vulnerability management. Our engineers configure and evidence the lot, and we confirm the stack against your target tier before we quote.
Does deploying security software get us certified?
No. No SMB1001 requirement is met by software alone. Every control is completed by configuration, action or documented process, and only CyberCert certifies. Tools give us live evidence, but your business still has to show each control is in place.
What do the SMB1001 control codes mean?
Each requirement carries a four-part code. The first number is one of five areas: 1 is technology management, 2 is access management, 3 is backup and recovery, 4 is policies, plans and procedures, and 5 is education and training. A code like 2.5.1.0 means area 2, requirement 5, and the .1.0 suffix marks a raised variant that a higher tier demands, such as phishing-resistant MFA on email at Platinum.
Which tier do we need?
Most Australian businesses start at Silver or Gold, depending on what clients, insurers and tender panels ask for. The DSI Supplier Categorization Matrix sets the level by the information you handle, the access you hold and how critical your service is. Run the free SMB1001 gap assessment and we will place you on the ladder. Platinum and Diamond add independent audit.
How does the Privacy Act come into this?
Lawyers, accountants, conveyancers, real estate agents, trust and company service providers and precious metals dealers are now AML/CTF reporting entities, and from 1 July 2026 the Privacy Act applies to the personal information they handle for those services, whatever their size. Australian Privacy Principle 11 asks them to take reasonable steps to protect it. SMB1001 gives them a clear way to show it. This is general information, not legal advice.
