Quick Overview
Azure, AWS, and GCP all deliver roughly the same core services: compute, storage, databases, networking, identity, and AI. At the SMB scale, the choice usually comes down to three things: what software stack you already run, where your data needs to live, and who your IT partner knows.
For most Australian SMBs running Microsoft 365, Azure is the path of least resistance. For developer-heavy or SaaS businesses, AWS is almost always already in play. GCP is a strong third choice when analytics or Kubernetes is central.
Australian Regions
Azure
- Australia East (Sydney)
- Australia Southeast (Melbourne)
- Australia Central (Canberra, Gov only)
AWS
- Asia Pacific (Sydney) ap-southeast-2
- Asia Pacific (Melbourne) ap-southeast-4
GCP
- australia-southeast1 (Sydney)
- australia-southeast2 (Melbourne)
All three providers have IRAP-assessed regions for Australian Government workloads. Azure also operates a dedicated government region in Canberra.
Head to Head
Microsoft Azure
Strengths
- Deepest integration with Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Intune
- Azure AD and hybrid identity is unmatched
- Familiar tooling for Windows Server shops
- Strongest local government and enterprise presence in AU
- Generous M365 credits for non-profits and education
Trade-offs
- Pricing can spiral without Reservations / Savings Plans
- Portal UX is busier than AWS or GCP
- Some services lag AWS feature parity
Best for
Businesses running Microsoft 365, Windows Server, SQL Server, or hybrid AD environments. Default choice for most Australian SMBs.
Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Strengths
- Largest service catalogue in the industry
- Most mature region in AU (Sydney has been live since 2012)
- Strongest data engineering, analytics, and ML ecosystem
- Huge talent pool and documentation
Trade-offs
- Weaker identity story without third-party SSO
- Steeper learning curve for Windows-first teams
- Enterprise Support tier adds 10% minimum to the bill
Best for
Dev-heavy businesses, SaaS companies, data-intensive workloads, and anyone already running Linux in production.
Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
Strengths
- Enterprise-grade networking (Google runs its own global backbone)
- BigQuery is the gold standard for analytics
- Kubernetes (GKE) is the most polished managed K8s
- Strong AI/ML tooling, Vertex AI integration
Trade-offs
- Smaller service catalogue than AWS and Azure
- Less mature enterprise support in Australia
- Smaller local partner ecosystem
Best for
Data-first businesses, Workspace shops, Kubernetes-native apps, and AI/ML workloads.
Pricing Reality
On-demand prices are roughly within 10 to 15 percent of each other across all three. The real cost difference comes from commitment discounts, data egress, and service-specific quirks.
Commitment discounts
Azure Reservations, AWS Savings Plans, GCP Committed Use. Save 30 to 72% for 1 or 3 year commitments on known-steady workloads.
Data egress
All three charge to move data out. AWS is historically most aggressive. Factor this into disaster recovery designs.
Support tiers
AWS Business Support is 10% of monthly spend (minimum around AUD $150/mo). Azure Standard Support is roughly AUD $150/mo flat. GCP Standard is free.
Licensing
Azure Hybrid Benefit lets you reuse Windows Server and SQL Server licences. AWS and GCP now allow BYOL but with more friction.
Free tier
All three have 12-month free tiers. Azure adds around AUD $400 in credits on signup. AWS free tier is narrower but longer.
Storage pricing
GCP Archive Storage is cheapest for cold data. AWS Glacier has the most retrieval tiers. Azure Archive is simplest.
Best Fit for SMBs by Scenario
You use Microsoft 365 and want to lift a file server to cloud
Azure Files + Entra ID integration is the cleanest path. Azure Hybrid Benefit reuses your Windows Server licences.
You run a SaaS product or web application
Largest service catalogue, deepest dev ecosystem, best for greenfield app workloads.
You need a data warehouse or analytics platform
BigQuery is the fastest path for non-engineers. Redshift is stronger for complex ETL pipelines.
You use Google Workspace across the business
Shared identity, single bill, tight Workspace integration. Azure or AWS still work but add friction.
You need IRAP-assessed hosting for government data
Strongest Australian Government presence, dedicated government cloud region in Canberra.
You want disaster recovery for on-prem VMware
Both mature. Azure Site Recovery is simpler for Windows-heavy stacks.
You have one Linux app and want it cheap and simple
For single-VM workloads, DigitalOcean, Linode, or Vultr often beat hyperscalers on price.
Migration Paths
Lift and shift
Move existing VMs as-is. Fastest, cheapest to execute, highest ongoing cost. Good first step.
Replatform
Move VMs to managed services (Azure SQL, RDS, Cloud SQL). Moderate effort, better economics.
Refactor
Rearchitect app to serverless or containers. Most effort, best long-term cost and scalability.

Common Mistakes
Picking cloud by brand, not fit
Your software stack, identity platform, and partner expertise matter more than which cloud has nicer ads.
Ignoring commitment discounts
Running 24/7 workloads on on-demand pricing wastes 30 to 60% of spend. Reserve capacity for known-steady servers.
Building multi-cloud from day one
Multi-cloud doubles complexity, doubles talent requirements, rarely delivers the promised resilience.
Forgetting egress charges
Cloud to cloud, cloud to on-prem, and backup traffic all incur egress. Model this into TCO.
No cost alerts or budgets
All three providers include free budget alerts. Not enabling them is how you find out about a $40k VM three weeks later.
Moving without tagging strategy
Tag everything from day one. Owner, environment, cost centre, project. Retrofitting tags on 500 resources is misery.
